iQ Font - When Driving Becomes Writing

This video features the work of two Brussels-based designers, Pierre and Damien, creating a new font in an exciting way by using a car as their stylus! I learned of Pierre's and Damien's design work through my fellow @Chaella Tweeter, @designcrave (a.k.a William Barnes). Barnes website is DesignCrave, a Graphic, Industrial, Interior and Modern Design magazine.

Pierre, Damien and professional race pilot, Stef van Campenhoudt, collaborated to design a font with a car as the stylus.  The car's movements were tracked using custom software designed by interactive artist Zachary Lieberman. You can download the iQ font. For more images, check out iQ font on Flickr.

I'd Rather Be in the Studio!

" 'I'd Rather Be in the Studio! The Artist's No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion' offers practical approaches that help you sell more art and build an art career that lasts. Alyson B. Stanfield, the art-marketing guru behind ArtBizCoach.com, shares self-promotion tools that have enhanced the careers of thousands of artists. You'll learn how to: (1) Introduce yourself as an artist so people want to know more; (2) Nail your artist statement to discover the right words for all of your marketing messages; (3) Expand your mailing list and use it to cultivate collectors; (4) Create marketing materials that outshine the competition; (5) Become a media magnet so buyers come to you; (6) Take advantage of your Web site and blog to build a bigger audience; and much more. It would be great if there were a precise formula for getting your art into galleries, museums and private collections. But every artist's path is different. That's why I'd Rather Be in the Studio! provides easy-to-follow self-promotion practices that help you find your way at any point in your career. Match Internet marketing strategies with sincere personal skills to take charge of your career.

The author, Alyson B. Stanfield is an artist advocate, workshop leader, and art-marketing consultant who knows all about self-promotion. Labeled an introvert early in life, she has challenged herself many times to come out of her shell in order to lead a rich and rewarding life. And that's what she does with her clients. Alyson has helped thousands of artists develop their careers through her online classes, publications, workshops, and free weekly Art Marketing Action newsletter all available through ArtBizCoach.com. Alyson used the self-promotion tools in I'd Rather Be in the Studio! to launch ArtBizCoach.com. Prior to that, Alyson counseled artists informally throughout her ten years as a museum curator and educator in the Midwest. She wrote this book for the many talented artists who remain professionally unfulfilled because their work is not seen and not purchased. Alyson's mission is to empower artists to say goodbye to excuses and hello to success."

How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist: Selling Yourself Without Selling Your Soul

The classic handbook for launching and sustaining a career that "explodes the romantic notion of the starving artist," (The New York Times) with a brand-new chapter on Internet art marketing

"Now in its sixth edition, 'How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist' is the definitive guide to taking control of your career and making a good living in the art world. Drawing on nearly three decades of experience, Caroll Michels offers a wealth of insider’s information on getting into a gallery, being your own PR agent, and negotiating prices, as well as innovative marketing, exhibition, and sales opportunities for various artistic disciplines. She has also added a new section on digital printmaking and marketing in this emerging field.

Most notably, this sixth edition contains an entirely new chapter: "Art Marketing on the Internet." Michels offers criteria for selecting an ideal Web designer for your online portfolio and for organizing your Web presence, and shares proven methods for attracting curators, dealers, and private clients to your site. She also addresses vital legal concerns in the age of e-commerce, including copyrighting and registering your art, and finally, the appendix of resources, consistently updated online at Michels’s site the Artist Help Network (www.artisthelpnetwork.com), is fully revised.

Caroll Michels is a successful sculptor whose artwork has been exhibited in museums worldwide, and she has worked as a career coach on behalf of thousands of artists since 1978. She lives in Sarasota, Florida."

Featured Book: Breaking Into the Art World: How to Start Making a Living As an Artist

"Have you ever wanted to be a full-time artist and make a living at it? Have you ever wanted to know how to get started selling your art? Then this book is for you! "Breaking into the Art World" is filled with practical information on "how to get started making a living as an artist." The author, Marshall White, lives in Kona, Hawaii and works as a full-time artist. His paintings and prints of Hawaii are wonderfully detailed and popular with local art buyers and tourists who visit the island. At this writing, his works of art are displayed in various galleries in Hawaii and in Thailand and are collected by people from all over the world.

This book is the first of White's writings to be published and was written to help other artists who often ask him, "Do you make a living with your art?", "How did you make the jump to being a full-time artist?" It has been written for people who, like himself when he began, have no clue what to do to get started marketing and selling their art."

Featured Art: Abstract Squares

The abstract wall art featured below is ideal for home-staging 'prop' art. I'd use these pieces in a small bathroom opposite the toilet, or any area where an accent piece (or two of the same) would enhance an area of focus.

These gorgeous abstract wall art pieces are available from Amazon.com, by clicking the images or the links, below.
